General contractors Kirtley-Cole have initiated the street improvement work along NW Market Street, setting the electrical light poles and performing grading for sidewalks. The Cembonit (white exterior siding from Denmark) along the east elevation is finished, and the west side is nearly complete. Grid ceilings are installed in the café, classrooms, museum store, and Cultural Resource Center. The auditorium walls are insulated and drywall and taping has begun; the folding glass wall system along the eastern edge, opening onto the sun terrace, has been installed.

Over the next 30 days...

Zinc siding is being installed around the sun terrace, which will be followed by the remaining south elevation. Fabrication and installation of the skylight, running the full length of Fjord Hall, will continue through the month of October. Work on the windows, interior wall framing, curtain wall, and roofing should be completed by the end of the month.

Campaign Update

We're sincerely grateful to the late Chris Siddons for her important estate gift. Chris has been greatly missed since she passed away last year. She volunteered at the Museum for 30 years and was active on the Volunteer Council, serving as chair from 2011 to 2013. She and her husband, Will, played an integral role in shaping what the Museum is and will become.

Looking for a way to contribute to the new Museum right now?

Give the gift of a plaque! Don't miss your chance to take advantage of this special opportunity. Our plaque program allows supporters and their loved ones to become a permanent part of the Museum.> Each plaque will be displayed in the east garden or streetscape areas, serving as a visual reminder of how our dedicated community came together to make the new Nordic Museum a reality.

Or, make a gift to the campaign! We're still seeking gifts that can be made as multi-year pledges or single donations.

For more information about plaques, donations, membership, legacy giving, or other ways to support the Museum, please contact Deputy Director Jan Woldseth Colbrese at 206.789.5707 x39 or janwc@nordicmuseum.org.

We are in the final stages of the project, and we need your help to finish strong!

Upcoming Events

On Tuesday, October 10 at 12 p.m., come to the Museum for Soup & Cinema! This month's film is Reverse (Bakk), an Icelandic comedy. Reverse was the inaugural film of the 2017 Nordic Lights Film Festival. In it, two childhood friends decide to embark upon a trip around Iceland's Ring Road, driving entirely in reverse, to raise money for charity. But—the trip doesn't go as planned.

Next Thursday, October 12, join Ingibjörg Gréta Gisladottir, the CEO and creative director of Reykjavik Runway, at 7 p.m. for a discussion on Iceland's New Designers. She will speak to the ways designers can capitalize on resourcefulness to scale while creating their design identities. This event is affiliated with the traveling Taste of Iceland festival. Ingibjörg Gréta will also be selling bespoke Icelandic goods at a pop-up shop, open October 11–15 inside our Museum Store. Items for sale include jewelry, scarves, soaps, and more!
