Landscapes of Power

w/ Dr. Elisabeth Ward

2pm

Though the Vikings are not known for creating architectural marvels, they did have a strong understanding of monumental spaces and ritualized ways of landscape. In this illustrated lecture, Dr. Ward discusses evidence from Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Russia to show the diverse ways the Vikings made sure they left a mark on the landscape that could convey to enemies, rivals, and succeeding generations their claim to the land. This lecture will also begin with a brief discussion of the Sagas, and their legacy of influence on our understanding of the Vikings.

Dr. Elisabeth Ward  has served as Assistant Curator for the special Smithsonian Institution exhibition Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga and is the former Program Director for Vikingaheimar Museum in Reykjanesbær, Iceland. She has also served as Director of the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University.

Cost: $10 for Museum members, $15 for General Admission
