Cross Stitch 101

w/ Justin Allan-Spencer

1pm-4pm

If you’ve never picked up a needle and thread before, this class is for you. In this one-session class, students will get an in-depth introduction to basic cross stitch materials and techniques and hands-on practice. With traditional Icelandic needlework patterns as inspiration, we’ll explore the modern execution of this age-old craft.  Additional support is available at the monthly Nordic Museum Knit Cafe, which takes place the first Sunday of every month.

Please note: Materials will be supplied by the instructor, but a materials fee of $12 is due at the beginning of class.  This fee includes materials needed to complete the cross stitch sampler and introductory needle working tools including embroidery hoop, thread snips, and needles. Specialty tools like lighted magnifiers (recommended for people with trouble seeing small details) or thimbles are not included. Materials fee can be paid via cash, check, or credit card.

About the instructor: Justin Allan-Spencer comes from a family of accomplished needle-workers; both his mother and grandmother have created sizable collections utilizing a variety of techniques. Justin has been practicing embroidery for over thirty years. In 2014, he started to recreate the 1000+ traditional patterns collected in the Íslensk Sjónabók (Icelandic Pattern Book).
