Forest & Sea

The geography of the Nordic region is characterized by vast areas of sparsely populated forests, mountains, and fields surrounded by the sea.

The tough climate, characterized by long, dark winters and  intense summer light, has created the special bond between Nordic people and nature.

Respect for nature is a common cultural thread throughout the Nordic tradition and an ever-present concept found in exhibits at the Museum.

A distinct need for space with room to breathe — on the sea, in the mountains, or in the forest — has influenced today’s protective attitude to the sustainable management of the environment and development of natural resources.
