Pippi Longstocking and the Moomins continue to be favorites among English readers young and old. In this panel discussion, we will cover some of the aspects that make Nordic children's literature unique as well as the challenges and opportunities for bringing Nordic children's literature to English language audiences in the current publishing climate. This event is part of WorldKidLit month, which takes place every September and celebrates world literature and translation for children and young adults.

Laura Simeon is a Young Readers' Editor at Kirkus Reviews and former school librarian.

In 2013, she did research in Sweden on ethnic minorities in Swedish picture books through a grant from the Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund. Laura is co-chair of Rise: A Feminist Book Project and a member of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Archives & History Committee.

Mia Spangenberg translates fiction, nonfiction and children’s literature from Finnish, Swedish, and German into English.

Her books for children and adults have been published in Finland, the US and the UK, and in journals such as LitHub and Asymptote. She also teaches translation workshops and is a regular contributor to the WorldKidLit blog. Lotta Gavel Adams is Professor Emerita of Scandinavian Studies, University of Washington in Seattle, and Barbro Osher Chair Emerita of Swedish Studies.

She is an eminent Strindberg scholar and the author and editor of numerous books and articles on Strindberg.

Dr. Elizabeth DeNoma is the founder of DeNoma Literary Services, an international publishing consulting business offering translation, editorial, and foreign rights services.

She holds a ph.d. in Scandinavian Languages and Literature from the University of Washington and has worked in both the technology and publishing industries for companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Sebes & Bisseling, and the Ross Yoon Agency. She is the translator of books such as The Darkness Manifesto and Jellyfish Age Backwards.
