Join us for a presentation on our special new exhibition Across the West and Toward the North: Norwegian and American Landscape Photography, with co-curators Dr. Shannon Egan and Marthe Tollnes Fjellestad.

In an exciting new addition to the Barbro Osher gallery, Across the West and Toward the North provides a new examination of Norwegian and American landscape photography in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Join co-curators Shannon Egan and Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad as they immerse guests in the historical moment when once remote wildernesses were first surveyed, developed, and photographed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

    Marthe Tollnes Fjellestad

    Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad trained as an art photographer and holds an MA in Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice from Chelsea College of Art, London and an MA in Photographic History and Theory from De Montfort University, Leicester.

    Marthe Tollnes Fjellestad

    Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad trained as an art photographer and holds an MA in Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice from Chelsea College of Art, London and an MA in Photographic History and Theory from De Montfort University, Leicester. 

    She is the co-author, with Solveig Greve, of Starman – Sophus Tromholt Photographs 1882–1883 (Forlaget Press, 2018). As curator at the University of Bergen Library Picture Collection, Fjellestad’s research centred on historical photography from the North. With Shannon Egan, she is the curator of Across the West Toward the North: Norwegian and American Landscape Photography, touring 2020–2024 (catalogue on Utah University Press, 2022). Fjellestad is the curator at Perspektivet Museum, Tromsø.

    Shannon Egan received her M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University and her B.A. in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    Dr. Shannon Egan

    Shannon Egan received her M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University and her B.A. in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    She is Director of the Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College, where she also served as chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program and teaches courses on contemporary art, the history and theory of photography, and art and public policy. With photo historian and curator Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad, Egan is the co-editor of the book Across the West and Toward the North: Norwegian and American Landscape Photography (University of Utah Press, 2022) and co-curator of the accompanying traveling exhibition of the same name. With artist Anthony Cervino, Egan co-curates contemporary art exhibitions at the Ejecta Projects Art Gallery in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
