Dr. Julie Kang is a first-generation Korean American immigrant, lifelong educator, community bank co-founder, and 30-year Seattle District 5 resident running for Seattle City Council.
Julie has spent three decades strengthening Seattle's communities. A National Board Certified Teacher with a PhD from the University of Washington, she has led educational initiatives, advocated for immigrant and refugee families, and served on numerous civic commissions. She also co-founded a community bank in District 5 and led it through the 2008 financial crisis. Her experience as an educator, financial executive, and member of a union household gives her a practical understanding of education, finance, working families, and neighborhood businesses.
Julie is running to help build Seattle where people can afford to live, feel safe, and have opportunities to thrive. After personally knocking on more than 12,000 doors, she has heard a consistent message from neighbors. People just want the basics to work. Her priorities include safe streets, vibrant parks, clean neighborhoods, enough first responders to respond, and a responsive City Hall. She believes lasting solutions require addressing root causes, including poverty, while confronting gun violence and human trafficking, strengthening public safety and crisis response, improving affordability, and ensuring District 5 receives its fair share of city resources.
Julie believes District 5 deserves an independent voice at City Hall, one willing to collaborate when it delivers results and challenges the status quo when it doesn't. Her philosophy is simple. Show up. Listen. Take action. Deliver results for Seattle District 5.
