One of the most beloved seasonal traditions is the crafting and wearing of flower crowns (Swedish: midsommarkransar). Handmade from wildflowers and greenery, these crowns symbolize renewal, fertility, and the joy of the season.

The tradition dates back centuries. In pre-Christian times, flowers were believed to hold magical properties. One custom involved young women picking seven types of flowers and placing them under their pillows on Midsummer’s Eve in hopes of dreaming of their future spouse.

How to Make Your Own Midsummer Flower Crown

Feeling inspired to make your own Midsummer wreath? Check out our step-by-step guide:

  1. Gather Materials: Collect fresh or artificial flowers, the floral wire, floral tape, and scissors for flowers. Choose flowers of varying sizes and colors for a more dynamic look.
  2. Adjust the Base: Measure the floral wire around your head where you want the crown to sit, almost like a headband.
  3. Prepare the Flowers: Trim the flower stems to about 2–3 inches long. We will use the leaves and greenery.
  4. Attach the Flowers: Start with the larger the green leaves then place the smaller leaves in between. Use floral tape to secure each stem to the wire base, wrapping the tape tightly around the stem and wire. Then add the flowers with the same method as the leaves, working in one direction for a neat appearance.
  5. Final Touches: Once all flowers are attached, inspect the crown for any gaps or uneven sections. Adjust as necessary, and ensure the crown fits comfortably on your head.
