Introduction to Block Printing: Nautical PNW

Learn the basics of block printing in this introductory class with local teaching artist Kayla Ann. Kayla will guide students through the basic tools and techniques used in block printing, while exploring motifs from PNW landscapes and how it ties to the current exhibit by Nina Katchadourian: Origin Stories. Students will leave class with a finished print at the materials/ knowledge to continue printing at home. 

Hand and wrist dexterity required for this class. Ages 16+. 

Materials Required for the Class:

Students will need to purchase and provide their own block printing kit for the class, like this one by Speedball or similar. You will need:

  • Carving block
  • Carving tool
  • Brayer
  • Ink

    Kayla Ann

    Kayla Ann is a Seattle based artist and designer known for her playful print designs, colorful illustrations, and her endless love of plants and flowers. She blends elements from the natural world and vintage-inspired motifs to create surface pattern designs, illustrations, and murals. Her signature style combines sketches with pops of color, creating moments of joy that bring awareness to our innate connection with nature.
