Laura Ricketts: Skaite-Maria Mittens: Swedish Sami Knitting Brought to Light

Skaite-Maria was a Sámi lady from Northern Sweden who created distinctive knitting in small, geometric designs to form sturdy, warm, hard-wearing mittens. The world knows about her thanks to the research and writing of Erika Pavval of Jokkmokk, Sweden. We will discuss Skaite-Maria’s knitting and life while beginning her mitten that I call “Out of the Grey.”

What to Bring
Yarn:
Rauma Strikkegarn  in #16 Black (MC), #01 Natural White (CC1), and #12 Medium Grey (CC2) is recommended
Needles:  Size US 2 / 2.5mm

Homework: Swatch to find correct needle size and get gauge of 15.5 sts x 16 r = 2 in / 5 cm. Using long-tail method and main color in a wool sportweight yarn, CO 64 sts. Divide evenly onto 4 dpn, pm, and join in the round being careful not to twist.

Knitting Level: Knitter should be comfortable knitting at a tight gauge. This would be a good pattern for a first time mitten or first time colorwork.
